In the modern world of an increasing population and dwindling natural resources, optimized use of such resources is key to sustainable global development, including improving food production, reducing water use, advancing nutrient management, mitigating climate change effects, etc. Academia has the most advanced available knowledge regarding these and can help regulatory and commercial sectors substantially in optimizing the management of such resources. Regulatory and commercial sectors have the most capacity and incentives to implement the latest academic innovations and bring them out to society on a large scale.

Direct measurements of heat, water, carbon, and greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes are game changers for both science and society. By capturing real-time, high-integrity data at the source, flux science moves beyond proxies to deliver the insights needed for fair, fast, and equitable natural and climate solutions across both natural and built environments. This innovative approach also ensures that stakeholders, both small and large, are duly recognized for their contributions.

This session, co-organized jointly by academia (ARPA, Water for Food Global Institute, University of Nebraska), industry (APRIL Group, CarbonSpace, LI-COR), and non-profits (ICARDA, CarbonDew), will focus on the translation of flux science into operational and societal applications. We aim to highlight how collaborations between research institutions, industry, and public organizations are using direct flux observations to support real-world decision-making.

We invite bold ideas, case studies, and demonstrations on how flux measurements are driving advances in practical environmental, agricultural, or climate benefits, including:

  • carbon accounting and climate mitigation
  • water use efficiency and irrigation management
  • sustainable agriculture and forestry
  • peatland and wetland GHG monitoring and restoration; optimization of productivity and emission
  • climate-smart land management
  • urban and industrial emissions monitoring
  • severe weather mitigation, and air quality improvement
  • integration of flux measurements with satellites, models, and digital monitoring systems

We particularly encourage case studies and interdisciplinary collaborations that demonstrate how flux observations are being translated into policy, operational management, support to farmers, or commercial applications.

Presentations may also highlight breakthroughs in precision irrigation, soil, and plant treatments, GHG reduction strategies, and the calibration of satellite and model products.
